PROFESSOR Motoi Oi, founder of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc., was born in 1910 in Shikoku, Japan. His mother’s death when Professor Oi was only nine years of age, followed by a series of family misfortunes, led to long periods of struggle. After high school, Professor Oi studied painting at the Pacific Art College in Tokyo. He first received wide recognition at the age of 26 when one of his paintings was selected for the 1936 National Art Exhibition sponsored by the Japanese Government. As his reputation grew, he exhibited widely in Japan and elsewhere before coming to the United States in 1954 for a lengthy visit.
In 1958 he moved to the United States permanently where he painted, wrote books on Sumi-e painting and taught art at Queens College, New York City and the Brooklym Institute of Art and Science. In 1963 he founded the Sumi-e Society of America in New York City. When asked why he had started the Sumi-e Society, Professor Oi answered, in part “In the East, paintings reflect the great joy of culture. They are a reflection of an intense personal idiom. My idea was to provide a means through which the fresh, new spirit of American culture could be viewed in Sumi-e.” In 1981 he was awarded the 6th class of the Order of the Rising Sun for his work in US-Japan cultural relations.
